The Seen and the Unseen: self portraits with domestic work

This unsettling short film about the endless repetition of domestic work is comprised of dated self portraits rendered over and over again in variations of charcoal, pen, pastel and watercolor. Medley’s features are unsmiling, a serious look of concentration or resignation on her face, her chin sometimes cupped in her hand, always staring straight out at the viewer. Occasionally she is described with minimal lines - the proportions and shapes skewed or overlapping giving the sense of unravelling patience or sanity. Narrated over these intense and emotive images we hear a Medley’s voice listing dates and domestic tasks, it is monotonous and repetitive giving the effect of an exasperating, never ending cycle of seemingly insignificant chores.
